Tuesday, July 14th, 2020

Station 64 (White Valley VFD) was dispatched by Westmoreland 911 at 7:19 AM for a Commercial Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) within Station 64's district. Chief 64 arrived on scene and established command. Chief 64 reported nothing showing from the exterior of the building. Upon entry Chief 64 found a chemical spill within the commercial structure. Chief 64 then requested Westmoreland 911 to activate Team 800 (Westmoreland County Hazardous Materials Response Team). Engine 64 went enroute with (4) firefighters on board and Rescue 64 with (3) firefighters on board. Crews established a perimeter outside the commercial structure and crews donned Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA's) before entering the structure. Two firefighters from 64 and two firefighters from 20 then entered the structure checking for any fire throughout the structure. Once there was no imminent threat of fire, all crews returned outside until the Westmoreland County Hazmat Team arrived. Crews discovered the leaking chemical was Potassium Superoxide and took special precautions when entering the structure. Once Team 800 arrived Hazmat Chief 800 took command of the scene. Hazmat crews then worked to isolate the spill from leaking further outside of the structure. Crews entered the structure and monitored the pH of the chemical and the water on the ground inside the structure from the sprinklers along with monitoring the air quality. Once the air quality was determined to be at a safe level, crews determined the area was safe. Command 64 then released all companies and crews back in service.

Other responding companies were: Station 20 (Murrysville VFC), Station 22 (Export VFD), Station 63 (Claridge VFD), Station 87 (Harrison City VFC), Station 78 (Sardis VFC), Station 30 (Delmont VFD), Station 112 (City of Jeannette FD), Station 610 (Murrysville Medic One), Team 800, (Westmoreland County Hazardous Materials Response Team), Murrysville Police Department, and Penn Township Police Department
